Macron Hosts Sharaa, Stresses Protection for All Citizens Amid Sectarian Tensions

Paris: French President Emmanuel Macron has called on Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens in Syria, following a wave of deadly sectarian clashes that have raised international concern. Speaking during Sharaa's official visit to France, Macron emphasized that protecting all communities without discrimination is crucial for Syria's stability.

The visit has sparked controversy in France, with critics accusing Macron of engaging with a leader seen by some as a former jihadist. Sharaa, who previously led the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), rose to power after the overthrow of long-time Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in December. Despite the criticism, Macron defended his decision, arguing that dialogue was necessary to support peace and stability in Syria.

Macron condemned recent violence targeting Syria’s Alawite and Druze minorities, calling it "unacceptable" and urging Sharaa to prosecute those responsible. He also signaled that the European Union might consider easing sanctions on Syria if the new government demonstrates a genuine commitment to human rights.

Sharaa revealed that Syria is currently engaged in indirect talks with Israel aimed at de-escalating regional tensions. Macron criticized Israel's recent airstrikes on Syrian territory, arguing that such actions undermine regional security.

During his visit, Sharaa met with Farid al-Madhan, a whistleblower known as "Caesar," who exposed the brutal torture practices of the Assad regime. This meeting was viewed as an attempt by Sharaa’s administration to distance itself from Assad's legacy.

The French government is also exploring new economic opportunities in Syria. French logistics company CMA CGM recently secured a 30-year contract to develop and operate the port of Latakia, reflecting France's interest in re-establishing its influence in the region.

Macron concluded his meeting with Sharaa with a clear message: France will closely monitor Syria’s progress. "Mr. President, I count on you," he told Sharaa.
